Do you use a computer? Do you know what a motherboard is? Would you know how to tell if there was a problem with the motherboard in your computer? Most computer users have a general idea of how their computers work, but many people do not know anything about what is inside the machines they use every day. Motherboards are the main complicated component in the computer that makes it run, made from interconnected electrical components wired and soldered onto the board. There are many things that can cause problems with computers. Older computers may not run if their motherboards are damaged or burnt out, which can happen in different ways.

The kind of motherboard in the computer determines the computer’s capabilities. Motherboards contain the central processing unit, microprocessor and memory chips, and other components like external storage, controllers, and peripheral devices attached as plug-in cards or cables. Motherboards also hold the motherboard chipset, sockets with microprocessors and memory, memory chips, the system’s BIOS (Basic Input/Output System), clocks to synchronize the various components, slots for expansion cards, power connectors to distribute electricity to components, and heat sinks and fans to cool the system during operation. All these parts are wired onto the motherboard and run the computer and all its peripherals like printers, scanners, keyboards, etc.

All the component’s critical connections are processed by this printed circuit board that houses the Central Processing Unit (CPU) and the BIOS chip. The CPU and the BIOS chip run a computer. The computer is turned on and the BIOS starts up, and it powers up the CPU which controls all the other main systems of the computer. The CPU consists of many transistors (sometimes millions) and devices that process a multitude of programmed tasks.

Motherboards normally last eight to ten years with normal use and care. The computer will not run with a damaged or defective motherboard and manufacturers will replace them if they fail while under warranty. If motherboards fail or are damaged outside of warranty, they will require replacement to be able to run the computer again.

Most motherboards will last eight to ten years, although some are defective right out of the box and some fail soon after initial use. Manufacturers will replace them if they fail while under warranty. If out of warranty, or for the purposes of upgrades, motherboards can be costly and difficult to replace.

Many things damage motherboards in computers making replacement necessary. Lightning, hard impact or dropping the computer, spilling liquids on the computer, strong magnetic or electrical charges, and fan or heat sink failure can all break and damage the delicate wiring and electrical components in the motherboard. A common sign of motherboard failure is if the computer will not boot up, but diagnostic testing is needed to determine if the motherboard is damaged. Replacing a damaged motherboard involves the cost of a new board plus installation.

A motherboard is a crowded piece of real estate inside a computer. It holds the CPU, memory slot(s), PCI and AGP slots, power supply plug-in, batteries, controllers, fans, ports, USB(s), and other types of plug-ins. It is the communications center in the computer, and the type of motherboard in the computer depends on the type of CPU running in the computer. Upgrading or replacing a motherboard begins with knowing what CPU is in the computer. However, most computer users won’t ever have to do anything with the motherboard, except know that it runs their computer.

Upgrading your computer system often starts with a graphics card upgrade but as prices vary immensely you need to ensure you buy the right one.

Do You Want To Play The Latest Games

Initially it is a good idea to take a step back before making a purchase and ascertaining the level of upgrade that would be most suitable i.e. are you an ardent games player. Find out whether the majority are in 2-D or in 3-D

If most are older games then it could be a waste of money buying a mid to expensive card for a variety of reasons. Remember that the CPU speed is the variable that you’ll need to consider the most. Take care here before you buy anything. Buying a powerful new card may be in vain if your processor is simply not up to the task.

Not All Cards Are The Same

You may not be aware but people are often caught out by the different card slot types available, simply put if you get the wrong one it will not fit in your system.

Depending on your mainboard there will be a choice of suitable card types; PCI, AGP and Pci-e

Is There Enough Memory In Your Computer?

Often doing a graphic card upgrade will also require a computer memory upgrade too!

Graphics cards will be available with different gpu’s and varying amounts of memory, and if your computer only has a small amount of onboard memory then you will run into a big snag as you will have insufficient on board ram to support your system devices and installation will either fail or your computer will end up slower than before.

Does Your Computer Have Enough Power?

Bigger cards draw more power from your computer so you need to be aware of this as well, the older the power supply the smaller it may be, and it may only be around 200w or there abouts, so depending on if you have already added additional hardware to your system, this may over strain the supply which can make your computer very unstable indeed. Also don’t forget thatmany of the new breed of graphics cards may need an additional direct power connection so check your cabling before purchase and buy a splitter if your need one.

Is My Case Suitable?

Even some PC tech’s forget about this one as case design does vary from manufacturer to manufacturer or depending on the main board manufacturer, graphic card space may have not been a major consideration when the board was designed so a newer card will simply not fit!

The new generation of cards often have multiple GPU’s or large amount of memory so the tend to be a lot longer than previous cards. With newer cards working a lot harder they tend to generate a lot more heat so onboard cooling has been increase. This tends to lead to a thicker card as well so you may need to move other Pci cards to accommodate a larger graphics card.

A graphics card upgrade is worth the effort but you do need to take account of the above considerations, but if you mainboard is based on the older AGP graphics standard you will more than likely be better off buying new if graphics performance is what you require.

If it has every happened to you you will understand just how annoying it is to lose all your photos stored on your cameras memory card or even on your flash drive.

Sometimes retrieving your files can be resolved quite easily but if you are unsure or your photo’s are valuable then our <a href="http://www.londoncomputerrepair.org.uk/Data-Recovery-London.html"target="_self"title="data recovery" >data recovery service can help, however if it it just plain annoying and you are happy to try yourself then here is an interesting article that you may find useful.

One cautionary note however, never write back to the same device that the photos are stored on as this may over write the files you are trying to save.

Information To Help You Recover Deleted Pics From A Digital Camera

A digital camera can be a terrific way to record and remember the wonderful moments you experience throughout your life. Unfortunately, it can be easy to accidentally delete a picture or group of photos you have taken. The good news is once you have deleted them from your camera, you can still recover deleted pics in most cases.

Your digital camera stores pictures in separate files on the memory card that is inside. There are a number of different memory cards including SD, CF, Memory Stick, and MMC Card to name a few. While there are several different brands, sizes, and models of memory cards, they all act like a floppy disc or hard drive to your camera. After deleted a picture or multiple pictures, your camera will not delete the picture file body and simply leaves them as is.

Because of this, you should be able to retrieve any pictures you have deleted. To start, you will need to connect your camera to a computer using a USB cord. If the camera does not appear as a drive letter, you can use an external USB card to read the camera. After inserting the card, it should be recognized as a drive letter in “My Computer.” This is how you will use the software tool to get the data from your memory card.

Now that the camera has been connected, you will next download some kind of picture recovery software online.
There are a number of different kinds of software you can find online such as CardRecovery, PhotosRecovery, and PicRecovery. All are fairly small downloads and should be quick to install.

After downloading the software, the next step to undelete deleted pics is to run the software and follow the instructions carefully. You will then click on the welcome window and specify the drive letter of your camera or card reader. You may also want to specific the file type to retrieve and the destination location to save the recovered pictures.

Once you have selected the correct information, your computer will begin to scan the card. Depending on how much memory is on the card, it can take several minutes to perform a complete scan. As soon as the scan is complete, you will be able to preview the deleted pictures as a thumbnail and select the pictures you need. Finally, click next on the software screen and it will save the pictures you have selected to the location you specified.

If you have deleted pictures you did not want to delete, all hope is not lost. With the simple instructions listed in this article, you can recover deleted pics fairly easily. Just make sure to follow the instructions carefully in order to undelete deleted pics from your camera and memory card.

—————————————————-

There is a good deal of confusion in the market as to what actually makes a good Pc or laptop, how much should you spend and in the case of portable computing exactly whats the difference between a laptop and a netbook.

While many consumers tend to shop on price in the main this can be a big mistake as the usage you will put your PC or mobile computer to should be your most important consideration because if you “buy right” from day one you will have a system that will last for many years and you’ll be very happy with.

Conversely if you buy wrong then it will always be an issue for you and you’ll end up probably replacing your system far earlier than would of been necessary (and you’ll be lighter in the pocket).

Here is a useful article that my help you understand the importance of function over cost.

Understanding Netbooks and What They are Good For

Author: Greg Black

Article: Even though netbooks are new to the technology development scene and to the realm of mobile computing they are gaining a lot of the market share. There are many consumers that are looking for ultra portable but powerful computing devices that provide access to their important programs, applications and information no matter where they are. With so many different names for portable computers including laptop, portable pc and notebook, not all consumers have a good understanding of what makes a netbook different from a laptop or notebook which is causing some confusion.

Even among the techie types, there is ongoing argument about the difference between laptop computers, and the general perception among consumers is that “a laptop is a laptop.” This is, however, not the case, and many people that purchased a netbook computer expecting the functionality of a regular laptop have experienced some buyer’s remorse when they discover the lack of functionality in a netbook.

The appeal of a netbook is the price. And when a consumer sees a “laptop” that costs £300 and a “laptop” that costs £900, they’ll choose the $300 model and assume that it will be “good enough.” The fact of the matter, though, is that the affordable price of a netbook computer comes at the reduction in features and functionality. When a consumer finds out that they are getting exactly what they paid for (a scaled down laptop), they can be a little disappointed.

The main point I am trying to make is that you need to understand the purpose of a netbook before you actually buy one. What is the true difference between a netbook and a normal laptop? Are the differences really that significant?

Netbooks are portable computers that are designed for the specific purpose of having access to the internet and wireless communications. All of their computing power is encased in a smaller casing which limits the amount of components that can fit in its small ultra portable case. Most netbooks are limited to the size of hard drive and memory and don’t have an optical CD or DVD drive which limits some memory intensive high-end applications from running on netbooks. Its size is what makes them a favorite for those on the go and so attractive with their light and durable casing.

Netbooks were designed with the average consumer user in mind. They are not meant for gaming, heavy database management or programming which are not typical consumer user activities. They are perfect for consumers who would like a way to surf the net, stay connected through social media and networks, communicate with friends and family through email and instant message, or just to have some computing power handy and available to them.

There are more and more companies that are offering web based versions of their popular programs which offer convenient access from anywhere. Even a basic netbook computer can take advantage of these online based programs to stay productive without an intense processing computer.

Netbooks may not be for everyone. It may not make sense for someone looking for an extremely powerful portable computer, but it could make sense for anyone looking to stay productive and connected from wherever they may be or go.

Greg Black is a huge fan of Netbooks<! They are a good solution if you are not wanting a large laptop. Visit Dell.com today for more information.

This article was written for the US market so uk readers will need to visit Dell uk of course, or one of the other netbook retailers if dell is not your prefered supplier, but hopefully this summary from a third party perspective will help you understand and take home the importance of making the right buying choice because of your own personal computing needs not because it seemed like a bargain at the time.

Security On a Wireless Router

by Feliciano Mulen

Security is something most people should think about when they ever decide to install a wireless router. It does not matter if you have DSL, cable or any other provider as long as you are on wireless you will be less security than you would be wired. It does not have to be something that you should be worried about. Of course wireless is not completely vulnerable.

Nowadays, security comes built-in in most wireless routers. However, you may need to configure for the basic security for wireless and that is to have a closed Wi-fi rather than open. This itself would make it so that only an authorized person would be allowed on your network. Generally, when you first setup your router, you would have gone through the process. If you have your instruction manual it can help you a bit on setting the security up or changing it. If you can get on to the router configuration then you are one step closer to setting a secure wireless connection.

When you are able to get on to the router configuration page there is something you can do its works with the Media Access Control or MAC. It is a level of security that you can setup that you can add for security. On you computers’ controller panel under network you can find your wireless cards’ MAC address. When you find it you should go back to your routers’ configuration page where you would find a place where you can enter the MAC address. This would help keep unwanted users of you wireless network.

Back on to the router configuration page there should be something labeled SSID (Service Set Identifier). This is to identify a wireless routers’ individual network, or your WLAN. It can be be 32 characters long combining letters or numbers. To prevent anyone in finding your wireless network you should disable the SSID. This would make your network invisible. If you do this you must now reconfigure any other computers or wireless devices to the routers new name, and password if you enabled it as well.

Then there is Media Access Control or MAC. This is another level of security that you can setup that you can add for further improved security. On you computers’ controller panel under network you can find your wireless cards’ MAC address. When you find it you should go back to your routers’ configuration page where you would find a place where you can enter the MAC address. This would help keep unwanted users of you wireless network.

These steps may seem a lot to do and it maybe but for security it may be enough. There are other forms of setting up more security, most of with would require additional hardware so if you want that extra security you should.

Protecting your computer or laptop against a variety of malicious downloads is a very important aspect of personal computer security as malware and trojans are becoming increasingly refined and can be a lot harder to capture before infecting your system.

Antivirus software alone is simply not enough to offer adequate protection anymore but a vast majority of users believe that there anti virus will do the job just fine (even if they fail to update it).

Here is a useful artical that explains some of the other options for protecting your system

Step By Step To A Secure Personal Computer

by Richard Lechner

If you are the user of a windows computer you might already be aware of how distressing and annoying an infection from various malware can be. Some of the things you may have noticed from a computer with an infection include slowness, security issues and generally other strange behaviour.

Probably the single most annoying thing is when you have antivirus software installed but it doesn’t pick up on a virus on your PC.

This article is geared to help you build your own effective computer security system which will protect your computer form various malware, trojans, phishing, viruses and adware amongst other stuff. We hope that you will then have a computer that is far more secure than it was before from such attacks. The other important thing is that your computer will then be fully immunized from virtually all of these online security issues with the help of a really effective firewall.

We aim to help you make your computer impenetrable from all security attacks.

The speed with which you can secure your computer need not be a hurdle. A secure system can be achieved fairly quickly and without costing a lot of money also. If you are concerned that it all sounds to complicated then fear not as building a secure system is a relatively simple process and even a computer novice can take the necessary steps quite easily.

Here follows all the necessary steps that you need to take to build your security system..

1. Probably the most essential step is to install a really good antivirus software package from someone like Norton, ESet, Kaspersky or McAfee to name but a few brands. There are plenty of good comparison websites that offer some good reviews to help you make up your mind.

2. It is also very important that you have installed an anti malware software package like spy doctor or Malwarebytes anti malware. This will work hand in hand with your main anti virus package and will help mop up all the nasty malware that your main anti virus software might miss.

3. The next most important and essential item on your security checklist is to have a really good firewall blocking any infiltrations from unwanted sources that is trying to invade your computer. The windows firewall is adequate but it is a good idea to install something more robust. Once again there are many reviews and comparisons available online for you to make a decision. Some good brands are zonealarm and Norton.

4. A good secure browser is also important. Firefox comes highly recommended for its awesome addon architecture which offers addons like ad blockers and script blockers.

5. Another important thing to do is to ensure that your browser’s security settings are set correctly and that any active X controls are set accordingly. You should also ensure that any restricted sites are set up properly.

So in summary, a good security system for your windows computer should begin with a good anti virus package and anti malware and spyware package. Also a good firewall will stop any unwanted intrusions.

To help you with the next step in making your computer safe, this site will help you find the best antivirus firewall software

Hopefully you found article helpful but if you do need help with antivirus remopval or trojan removal give computer repair London a call

You may not know much or even care about how your memory module works with your Mac or PC and to be fair you may not need to but what you do need to know is computer memory is a vital component to making your computer run not only more smoothly but also in many cases a lot faster.

The faster a computer or CPU can access the information by keeping memory in a cache, the quicker the machine actually is and will perform, the problem is however is if you computer or laptop was a budget buy or is a year or two old then you may simply not have enough to run your computer properly.

Lack of system memory is one of the prime causes of slow computers and it is also a very cost effective upgrade

PC memory upgrades are pretty simple to do and with the hot summer months now with us this is an ideal time to have a memory upgrade completed at the same time as you are having your system maintained to ensure it is free from the killer dust that causes many Pc’s to overheat.

What was once an “interesting” technology is now a fully grown communication medium and is being increasingly being adopted by business users giving them massive savings against conventional telephony costs, but this is also an area where private home users can save money too.

Surpringly however many people are still blissfully unaware of this technology or how it can save them money so here is an useful article explaining some of the pro’s and cons of VOIP.

VoIP Technology – Pros and Cons

If you are familiar with VoIP, the acronym for Voice Over Internet Protocol, then you know that it is one of the latest and greatest ways of communicating. Instead of making a phone call using the telephone, people can now communicate by voice over the Internet. But is VOIP truly all that it is cracked up to be? Lets look at both the pros and cons of VoIP technology.

There are many benefits to VoIP. The only requirement you need is a broadband connection with either DSL or cable. If you have this, you can use VoIP. If you use VoIP through a PC-to-PC connection, then your calls are free anywhere, as long as, the receiver of the call has VoIP also. In addition, most VoIP providers offer unlimited calling plans for calls made within a certain area, for one monthly fee. There would be a nominal charge for calls made outside this area. In all cases, traditional phone service is much costlier. Most providers also offer extra premium services such as caller id, without additional charges.

Another benefit, with the integration of voice and data, is that there is a need for only one system. This makes for easy installation and saves money. An IP address, or number identifies each IP phone, and it is known by this address no matter where it is plugged in. The only thing required would be a broadband connection. This makes for easy moving or addition.

Along the lines of easy transportability, phones can be utilized anywhere as long as they are connected to an IP network. This assists telecommuting and international offices. All of these relate to cost savings. They are also very light and easy to carry.

There doesn’t appear to be any downsides to this new technology or does there? One of the biggest problems with VoIP is that it is run by power. If there is a power outage, your communications are down. This is unlike traditional phone service, where you can still use your phone without the aid of electricity.

Voice quality, in general, is efficient, but when you get into cable broadband, high traffic times could result in poorer qualities. Since the data is broken down and transmitted, sometimes a packet of data is delayed and will be dropped. This will result in silent periods.

You may also need to update your phone equipment since VoIP may only work with newer phones. Depending on how many phones you have to replace, this could be an expense.

The fact is that VoIP still has some kinks to work out. It is anticipated that these bugs will be resolved sometime during 2007. They are temporary annoyances, which will be soon be eradicated. As you can see, VoIP’s benefits far outnumber its negatives. From all aspects VoIP is the phone of the future, but the future may very well be here and now.

With many jobs now so reliant on computer based systems and technology many of us are spending increasing amounts of time sat at desks or working on computers, and if you are like myself not only will you spend time on the computer during the day but you may also have a computer based hobby or do a job where research is essential to your success and often this is done out of hours.

The human body is not designed by nature to be permanently seated for what is for many in excess of 6 hours (and often 10??) and more so it is imperative to your health to ensure you have an excellent posture and your workplace is “set up” to meet your individual needs.

Who knows once the human race has had time to evolve things may change but as that will not happen in your life time you need to help yourself.

If you find yourself at the end of the day with stiff arms or shoulders, or even backaches then it may be either your office furniture or your posture to blame. There are many sources on the internet that you can check out that can offer advice and guidance one of which can be found here (this is for advice only and not a personal recommendation).

Addressing you posture will help your body feel more relaxed when working on your computer either at home or work so it is well worth the time to investigate this further.

Word 2007 Error – .docx Cannot Be Opened Because There Are Problems With the Content

Office Open XML is the new format that has been introduced in Microsoft Office 2007. Based on XML and ZIP archive technologies, a file saved in Microsoft Office Word 2007 is divided into document parts. Each of these parts defines a part of the overall file contents. Thus it becomes easy for you to create and modify a Word 2007 document, either manually or programmatically.

Such files are saved with .docx extension. But they can catch odds of corruption, if subjected to unexpected shutdown, virus attack, application faults and other similar causes. However, if your recent file backup is updated and healthy, you can successfully restore the file. But backup issues necessitate the use Word Recovery applications.

While trying to open a Word 2007 document, you might receive the below error message:

“The Office Open XML File xxxxx.docx cannot be opened because there are problems with the content.”

Where, xxxx represents the name of Word 2007 document. Further, when you click Details of the error message, you get another error:

“The file is corrupt and cannot be opened.”

Or

“Word found unreadable content. Do you want to recover the contents of this document, click yes.”

Cause

The Word 2007 document is corrupted. It usually occurs when you perform round-tripping i.e. change the Word 2007 format into another file format and convert it back into Word 2007 format, generally after doing some modifications. Other possible reasons of file corruption could be application faults, unexpected shutdown, network errors etc.

Solution

A damaged Word 2007 document can be tried to repair using any of these methods:

• Open the document with ‘Open and Repair’ feature. To carry out this, click Microsoft Office Button and open the document.
• Try saving the document as HTML, TXT or a word processing application format.
• Create a new document and try copying all the contents of the file to it, leaving the last paragraph mark.
• Use your recent file backup and restore the damaged document
• If the same issue persists, scan your damaged file using Word Repair software. These are advanced word recovery tools built with safe technology to repair and restore damaged Word documents.

Stellar Phoenix Word Recovery is a comprehensive word repair tool that can repair and restore corrupted Word documents. Its offers a rich set of features, including support to Word 2007, 2003, 2002 and 2007, safe file repair design, advanced scanning procedures and graphically rich interface. It is compatible with Windows Vista, XP, 2003, 2000 and NT.

Slow computers can be caused by many different factors but in many cases it may be down to a lack of simple maintenance. Over time programs are loaded and unloaded, hard disks get fragmented and in the age of spyware many systems are totally bogged down with adware, malware and spyware and in the cases root infestations which enable somebody else to control a PC in the background.

A slow computer can can cost business hundreds and sometimes thousands of pounds a year depending on the role of the user due to the fact that everything they do on their PC can take 2,3 or even 10 times longer. Whilst this may not seem a problem on the face of it, if only 10 seconds are wasted every time somebody needs to open a file over the course of a year this soon mounts up.

Equally lack of maintenance can cause systems to overheat which then leads to system failure or perhaps even the need for <a href="http://www.londoncomputerrepair.org.uk/Data-Recovery-London.html"target="_self"title="data recovery" >data recovery which is the last thing you need.

Gadgets come and gadgets go but one thing most have in common is that over a period of time there seems to be an overwhelming drive to make things smaller and smaller.

Sometimes it’s simply for aesthetics sake and sometimes it is as an aid to portability or space saving especially around the home or home office where space is often at a premium.

Most of us are familiar with external storage devices in the form of external hard disk enclosures and some of us will also be familiar with network attached storage (NAS) devices, but the NAS world has just downsized big style with the announcement of the worlds smallest NAS device, the Thecus N0204 mini NAS.

This diminutive contender is no slouch though and is still a fully featured NAS device but on a very small scale with a 132 x 88 x 63mm footprint and tipping the scales at a less than half a bag of sugar by all accounts although weight will vary depending upon your hard disk configuration.

Even in this tiny form the Thecus N0204 can still support up to 1TB of storage either in raid O, raid 1 or just a bunch of disks format and if that was not enough the drive bays are hot swappable and it also features auto-rebuild.

The Thecus N0204 mini NAS is probably more suited to the home or home office environment in reality but given the data access, networking functionality and additional feature set of the device means that it would be equally at home in an office environment as well.

<a href="http://www.londoncomputerrepair.org.uk/Data-Recovery-London.html"target="_self"title="data recovery" >Data recovery jobs tend to fall into two distinct camps called logical and physical. The term physical is used to describe hard drive and media failures that can be classed as a mechanical failure of some sort but occasionally there is a crossover between the two

Physical categories just as the name implies are problems that can affect storage media due to some form of mechanical failure. Often mechanical failures will require a <a href="http://www.londoncomputerrepair.org.uk/Data-Recovery-London.html"target="_self"title="hard drive repair" >hard drive repair of some description but if the problem is caught early enough and for some types of physical failure a hard disk repair may not be necessary.

Physical failures may include head crashes, drive degradation causing bad sectors, actuator failure, power surges that damage the main PCB, hard drive motor damage, firmware corruption, seized bearings, media damage, controller errors, platter damage, heating and ventilation issues.

Some mechanical problems if not diagnosed early enough can go on to cause further damage and irrecoverable data problems for example a head drive crash. When the head crashes it can create particles in the drive which subsequently can cause further crashes and then a vicious spiral ensues until the data on the platter is beyond recovery.

The term logical failure is generally used to describe a file level problem some of which may simply be due to human error for example accidently deleting a file or even perhaps formatting a drive accidently (or perhaps intentionally by a disgruntled employee). Where malicious data loss has occurred this is often referred to computer forensics expert to trace the culprit.

Other logical failures include for example lost files and folder, virus attacks causing damage to system files making it impossible to access data, destroyed file tables, corrupted files, bad MFT records possibly caused by boot sector viruses, partition errors, and the operating system not being able to access the drive in order for you to actually use the computer.

Physical problems such as hard drive or media degradation can cause file level problems as well especially in the warmer months of the year when computers are prone to overheating, so although you may not need any apparent form of <a href="http://www.londoncomputerrepair.org.uk/"target="_self"title="Computer Repair London" >computer repair or <a href="http://www.londoncomputerrepair.org.uk/"target="_self"title="laptop repair London" >laptop repair do not overlook the need for essential computer maintenance which can help you avoid potential data loss problems.

Sadly if you are an internet user then you are bound to pick up a virus along the way unfortunately. Whilst most of us have become a lot wiser to those unexpected e-cards from a pal, or the message from an eBay user messages the instigators of these viruses have found newer ways to get access to your system.

Hackers are finding ways to get into peoples web sites and plant script and software downloads on unsuspecting sites, the first time a site owner may know they have a problem is when they spot the “this site may harm your computer” warning in the Google index.

To the end user though it may be to late and if they are unlucky they may have had a Trojan downloaded onto their computer or worse still a Trojan dropper ( a program that will keep downloading different Trojans) so if you remove one a little later another appears.

Even if you have the most up to data anti virus protection on your system don’t think you are immune as virus and Trojans are deliberately “changed” to avoid detection and often it is a later update that will spot the infection which is why it is important to keep your antivirus defences updated at all times.

If you have an infection on your system and need it removed give us a call.

With the summer on the way (and hopefully this year will be nice and warm) its time to look at your computer and perhaps give it a good internal clean.

Even in the cleanest environment computers do draw in a lot of dust and over time this dust starts to clog up your PC. Over time your processor heatsink will gradually get totally clogged as will the graphics card fan.

Summer tends to see the most problems with hardware failures as the combination of dust and the increase in ambient temperatures cause the internal temperature of your computer to rise well above normal levels, which in turn puts a strain on system components that lead to failure.

One of the worse components that is affected by the heat is of course your computers hard drive and an increase in temperature can cause hard drive degradation and subsequently data loss requiring <a href="http://www.londoncomputerrepair.org.uk/Data-Recovery-London.html"target="_self"title="data recovery" >data recovery.

If your computer has not been cleaned for quite a while or is starting to get hot already we’ll be able to carry out some computer maintenance on your PC to ensure you stand less chance of your system overheating in the warmer summer months.

USB drives and memory sticks are excellent examples of technology that has gone mainstream. They are designed to take more than the odd knock (where do you keep yours?) and in a lot of cases are quite robust and forgiving. My own drive is stuck on my keyring and frequently bangs into other objects in my day to day activities, but then unlike many people I use it mostly as mobile temporary storage or for software utilities and drivers so I tend to keep very little important original data on it.

Because of the increasingly large capacities of USB drives most users simply load up their drives with important files and folders and then somply forget about them so they are not even backed up so when a flash stick does break or the memory controller fails they are pretty much stuck with no access to their important data. This is particularly true with the student community who often store months of course work on their flash drives si if the drive fails they tend to have a major headache they could do without.

Fortunately <a href="http://www.londoncomputerrepair.org.uk/Data-Recovery-London.html"target="_self"title="USB data recovery" >USB data recovery is available so even if you crushed your drive, washed it or even snapped it in two provided the main memory chips have not suffered from any damage data can be recovered with high success rates.

If you need USB <a href="http://www.londoncomputerrepair.org.uk/Data-Recovery-London.html"target="_self"title="data recovery" >data recovery in the London area give our data recovery hotline a call.

The very first time you ever suffer from a hard drive failure really can be a very distressing time initiially especially if the data is very important but on the plus side once you have managed to get your data back you will understand the importance of making sure you have some form of data backup in place in case it ever happens again.

Everybodies files and folders will all have their own unique value and what to one person may seem vitally important to another will have little value. For some important data could be be cherished memories in the form of digital photography and for others it may be household documents or even essential business data.

For businesses however the value of data is far more important at data loss could include thousands of hours of work or even client records, some of which need to be kept for many years by law.

Even if your hard drive fails either in an individual computer or in a raid array file server there is in most cases a good chance of recovering some and quite often all of your files but there are some very important aspects to consider before any attempted recovery one of which is the recovery methodology used.

Commercial history shows that non expert attempts at <a href="http://www.londoncomputerrepair.org.uk/Data-Recovery-London.html"target="_self"title="data recovery" >data recovery often just using software often cause further and sometimes total data loss so if your data is valuable it is far better to use a specialist data recovery company as we have cutting edge technology and are capable of much deeper levels of data recovery and computer forensics as well as <a href="http://www.londoncomputerrepair.org.uk/Data-Recovery-London.html"target="_self"title="hard drive repair" >hard drive repair if required.

If you do decide to try a do it yourself approach then be prepared to lose valuable data, thats not saying you will but the chances are much much greater.

Modern servers are often the backbone of your IT infrastructure and if you run into a serious problem your business could stop so server and raid server disaster recovery planning and business continuity planning is something that every business manager or owner should take very seriously indeed.

Unforseen problems and data loss issues invariably cause business downtime of some description so your internal IT support person or team should be prepared for a certain amount of disruption, but they should also be aiming to achieve the quickest possible resolution to any data loss issues, whilst at the same time maintaining the highest percentage of availability across the network.

Online server backup and remote data backup solutions are an excellent way to ensure your business gets back on its feet as soon as possible because if you do have a server failure critical business data can be quickly retrieved from your remote data centre or on site redundant file store.

Testing of your business continuity plan is also critical and often overlooked, this should also be done periodically to ensure your strategy is robust and the implementation plan is effective. Correct planning, implementation and testing should eradicate the need for costly and unexpected disaster recovery or <a href="http://www.londoncomputerrepair.org.uk/Data-Recovery-London.html"target="_self"title="data recovery" >data recovery in the event of critical data loss.

There are different types of data recovery and a number of differing techniques as well depending upon your problem. For example “data recovery” could mean that data is recovered from some sort of backup source, whether it’s a zip drive or a local backup server, it could also mean data recovery from an online backup from a secure data centre as this method is becomming increasingly popular with IT managers and consultants.

Data Recovery can also mean recovering data from various types of media and storage devices that have become corrupted or physically damaged. For example, photos may be able to be retrieved from a USB memory stick, and business data could be retrieved from a failed raid array. You may even have even knocked your external hard drive off the shelf and caused a mechanical hard drive failure that will reqiure a <a href="http://www.londoncomputerrepair.org.uk/Data-Recovery-London.html"target="_self"title="hard drive repair" >hard drive repair in a clean room environment.

Whatever your particular data problem mighty be if you need data recovery in the London area give us a call as we supply data solutions for all sorts of data emergencies for global multi-national corporations, medium-sized businesses, small businesses, and even everyday home office and home PC users.
